Ask A Dentist 2025 Edition: Orlando Dentists Answer Your Questions
Orlando magazine sat down with several Central Florida dentists to discuss some of your most asked questions.
Why are dental x-rays important for our pediatric patients? How do digital x-rays benefit our patients compared to traditional x-rays?
Children’s teeth and jaws are constantly growing and developing. With digital dental x-rays, we can detect dental issues that may not be visible during a routine clinical exam. These digital radiographs provide quicker results, as images are available immediately, while using significantly lower radiation than traditional x-rays. The x-rays help with early detection of cavities and dental infections, identifying occlusal misalignments, and highlighting other oral health concerns. Using digital x-rays also allows for prompt treatment and better long-term outcomes for our pediatric patients. Additionally, digital images can be easily stored and shared with specialists, if necessary, facilitating better collaboration in treatment planning.

Help, my child snores and grinds his teeth!
Snoring and grinding are NOT normal. They may be signs of a child not receiving enough oxygen during sleep. This can lead to ADHD, bedwetting, allergies, crowded teeth, short temper, and so much more. Through soft oral appliances worn while the child sleeps, we are able to develop a child’s ideal airway naturally so that they can be the healthiest versions of themselves. We work to promote nasal breathing and widening of the dental arches, developing the jaw naturally, all while straightening teeth WITHOUT braces. Kids love them! We start as early as age 2, like I did with my own son. Healthier kids with straight teeth through sleep!

Laser vs. GentleWave®: Which is Better for Root Canal Disinfection?
Both Laser and GentleWave® are advanced technologies for root canal disinfection, but GentleWave® provides superior deep cleaning and preservation. Laser Technology uses high-energy light to eliminate bacteria; vaporizes infected tissue, reducing mechanical instrumentation; seals dentinal tubules, lowering reinfection risk; and is effective for deep infections and bacterial biofilms. GentleWave®: The Superior Disinfection Technology uses acoustic energy and fluid dynamics for deep cleaning; reaches microscopic areas traditional methods can’t; preserves more tooth structure, minimizing invasiveness; eliminates bacteria more efficiently in all canal spaces; less post-treatment inflammation for a more comfortable recovery; and provides more predictable long-term success, reducing retreatment risks.

What are the advantages of digital dentistry?
With digital dentistry, we can scan teeth and create digital models of teeth. Since implementing digital scanning, the workflow has become more efficient. Fewer dental impressions and quicker communication with the dental laboratory are just some of the advantages.

Who would be a good candidate for implant-supported dentures?
If you are missing all (or most) of your teeth on at least one jaw, getting fitted with implant-supported dentures may be the most viable option for you. This protocol attaches custom dentures securely over 4-6 implants, which are drilled into the arch of the mouth. Compared to the alternative of replacing missing teeth one by one, the option of a sameday implant-supported prosthetic is better for your bone health, is longer lasting, and is far more affordable.

Is gum disease serious?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. Despite being preventable and treatable, many people underestimate its seriousness, allowing it to progress until irreversible damage occurs. In its early stages, gum disease—commonly called gingivitis—may seem harmless. Symptoms like bleeding gums, mild swelling, or bad breath are often overlooked. However, untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease that damages the bone and tissue supporting your teeth. Without intervention, this can lead to tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss. The earlier gum disease is addressed, the better the outcome for your oral health and overall well-being. Ignoring it may seem like a minor oversight, but the consequences can be life-changing.
