Savannah’s Grand Scheme
Multiple delights await in the "Hostess City of the South."
One of our favorite Southern destinations, Savannah, Georgia is tranquil yet energetic, romantic yet family friendly, chic yet relaxed. And it’s easy to explore—in one of the best examples of urban planning we’ve ever seen, the city was laid out in a series of squares (23 of which remain today), which house historic buildings, statues, fountains, churches, markets and much more. Orleans Square, seen here, was designed in 1815 in honor of the heroes of the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. In 1989, the square’s fountain was dedicated by Savannah’s German Society to recognize the contribution of the city’s early German immigrants.
Savannah’s Kimpton Brice is nestled in another such square—Washington Square—just around the corner from Broughton Street, the famous thoroughfare that hosts one of the city’s most beloved destinations, Leopold’s, which has been a Savannah staple since 1919. Pedestrians will find many restaurants, shops and attractions here.
At the Eastern edge of Savannah’s Historic District, Kimpton Brice is but a stone’s throw from all the great attractions on River Street. If you do nothing else here, make time for a narrated harbor sightseeing tour with Savannah Riverboat Cruises. You’ll learn great tidbits about Savannah’s history and maybe see some dolphins along the way (we did). River Street Sweets, right next door to the ticket office, is another must. You’ll get a free sample of their world-famous pralines when you walk inside, but head to the back for more goodies such as peanut butter cups, chocolate-covered pretzels, caramel apples and candied cherries.
Savannah’s many neighborhoods and attractions make it a destination you’ll want to explore again and again even if it’s just for the fabulous, gigantic trees draped with Spanish moss (we love to sit beneath them for hours).
Read more about Savannah’s neighborhoods and outlying areas in our new series “48 Hours in …” which debuts in February; you’ll also find more about Savannah in an upcoming 2025 issue of Orlando Magazine. Among the coverage is:
• A deeper dive into the Historic District
• What’s hot now: the Starland District
