Nestled in Peacock Feathers
THE VIENNA SECESSION art movement began in 1897, when a group of artists, architects and designers broke away from Vienna’s traditional professional artist body. It sought to create new, progressive art and integrate that art into all aspects of life. Led by Gustav Klimt, the group created the Secession style; its hallmark being curvilinear, ornamental designs.
Kind of like a spray of peacock feathers. When you step into the lobby of the Grand Bohemian Orlando (GBO), you’ll come face-to-face with this style right away. It’s the design focus for GBO’s recent multi-million-dollar renovation, where only the hues found in a peacock’s plumage were used. Brilliantly woven throughout the hotel, these touches are evident in the grand sweep of the private dining room to the tapestries found next to your headboard. And tying it all together inside the hotel’s Starbucks, you’ll even find an artwork by Klimt.
After a tour of the magnificent update, GBO invited me for a luxurious stay. Months later, I’m still pining for the hotel. You’ll really get an overarching view of the aesthetic inside The Boheme, GBO’s signature restaurant. Ask to be seated at a table on the back wall, where you can clearly see the host’s desk—order a French Vagabond cocktail and just people-watch for a while.
This vantage point also allows you to get a peek at the goodies coming out from the kitchen. You’ll also get a great view of the exquisite light fixtures and other gorgeous details inspired by the Vienna Secession; the design was modeled after Ver Sacrum, the official publication of the movement.
The cuisine is French Revivalist Modern, and you’ll delight in every bite. Everything on the menu is intriguing, so I entrusted my dinner to my server, who steered me to dishes I might not have otherwise tried—and it was all spot on. To start, I dug into the elegant scallop crudo, garnished with apple, agua chiles, radish and avocado. I had to restrain myself from devouring it all in one fell swoop. Next up was the Chicken & Frites, which was hands-down the best chicken I’ve ever had. One doesn’t normally use the word “cut” when describing chicken, but it’s apt here. Words truly can’t do it justice—you must try it for yourself.
The Boheme has an impressive wine list, so do your dessert justice and pair it with a selection recommended by your server. Do not leave without having a glass of wine! Just like the celebrated bird, Grand Bohemian Orlando is full of beauty, grace and elegance.
Just outside The Boheme is the Bösendorfer Lounge, so named for its signature Bösendorfer piano. This sophisticated spot is relaxed and glam at the same time, easily transitioning from a great spot for lunch to a cozy post-concert hangout. Seeing a show at Dr. Phillips Center? You’re literally steps from GBO.
Location, location, location—GBO definitely has that. Not only is it close to Dr. Phillips, but also Kia Center, Church Street Station and, if you’re in need of some feline companionship, The Kitty Beautiful cat cafe. It’s also a short walk from Lake Eola Park, and now’s the perfect time for a walking tour. Gather up items for a picnic or stop at Publix along the way. On the way back, don’t miss all the cool exhibits at the Orange County Regional History Center, located inside the historic Orange County Courthouse on Central Boulevard.
When you get back to GBO, it’s time to unwind. Lucky for you, one of the most fabulous updates to GBO’s renovation is the gorgeous Altira Pool + Lounge. The theme here is bright, both in the cuisine and the design—the light, airy color palette is accentuated by bold prints, and its seasonal bites pop in your mouth. Celebrate midweek at Cityscapes + Chill (5-8 p.m. Wednesdays), GBO’s newest event offering with live music. If you can’t make it that day, don’t fret, Alti- ra’s happy hour takes place Monday-Friday from 4-6 p.m.
Want something more serene still? Escape to the Poseidon Spa and get lost in a journey of tranquility.
Of course, GBO’s rooms are so exquisite, it can be hard to set foot outside the door. The accommodations are fit for kings and queens, and indeed, GBO is a favorite hotel for basketball players, performers and other celebrities whose schedules bring them to downtown Orlando (or who just want a chic space to hole up in). Splurge and stay in one of the 35 suites—there are 16 unforgettable jacuzzi suites that offer views of downtown Orlando from the tub.
But aside from all the gorgeous touches, fantastic meals and pretty people to look at, GBO stands out for its service. From the valet staff and lobby attendants to the bartenders, servers and managers, everyone is welcoming and fulfills your requests with a smile. No having to ask twice here!
