How to Dress for Any Type of Date

One day in Orlando can take you through the country’s best nature trails to a theme park of your choice to a dinner and a show. And that only scrapes the surface of your options.

No matter how much time you spend with your sweetie, the type of date you undertake calls for a different wardrobe choice. Here are our recommendations on how to dress for the occasion.

Nature and outdoorsy dates

Whether you’re going kayaking or for a hike, it’s never a bad idea to bring along a waterproof belt bag. Clip it securely around your waist and tuck in essentials such as your wallet, cell phone, sunscreen, lip balm, everything you need at a moment’s notice. If you spend a decent amount of time outdoors, invest in something that’s well constructed.

We’ve seen people wear belt bags around their shoulders, similar to a crossbody look, but leave that fashion statement for sightseeing and concentrate on function.

Footwear is important component of any date, but when you’re out in the elements, look for a well-gripping tennis shoe or hiking boot. If you’ll be in the water, bring along a pair of water shoes. Don’t forget a towel unless you want to drip dry.

As for clothing, a cotton or a cotton blend shirt will keep you cool. If you get warm easily, a pair of shorts may be in order, but bring leggings or longer pants if you plan to do any rock climbing.

Bring along a change of clothes (including underwear) if the date is going to continue or you just want to freshen up. Carry it all in a waterproof backpack or duffel bag. We can’t emphasize waterproof enough, whether you go for a dip or not—do you know how many lakes we have in Central Florida? Visit Central Florida estimates more than 550. Water is everywhere.

Adventurous dates

Going skydiving? Ziplining? For an ATV ride? Lightweight, layered clothing is your mantra. And definitely closed-toe shoes. You’ll may be looking at dramatic temperature changes, so adding a jacket or wrap and peeling off track pants to shorts will be an option you’ll be thankful for later. Carry it all in the waterproof backpack or duffel.

If you think you’ll be getting wet or dirty, bring a lightweight raincoat or poncho and a pair of shoes you won’t cry over if they get ruined. Your hair’s likely to get messy as well, so bring some hair ties or a cap for a quick fix. If you’re going out afterwards, stow a mini bottle of shampoo and towel in your bag should you desire a quick wash.

Food dates

How you dress for a meal out depends on the experience. Is it a sports bar with pub grub or a multi-course meal from a celebrity chef? In general, a fancy top with a nice pair of jeans or pants fits the bill, and you can always dress it up with a killer heel or embellished flat.

Special occasion dinners and chef’s pairings, however, scream “dress to impress.” Don’t worry about the trends, the best style is what you feel comfortable in—time to showcase your authentic self! Build your wardrobe around a statement piece—an oversized, artistic necklace, a funky pair of boots, anything that brings in that wow factor.

Playful dates

What if you’re going to an immersive experience, such as an arcade, museum or animal encounter? Think a more casual version of the first food date option. Something stylish but easy to move around in, paired with a comfortable pair of flats or loafers. Embellish your look with a nice chain or a pretty pair of earrings. Make sure it’s something that won’t hang down too far if you get up close to any animals.

Theme park dates

Comfort, comfort, comfort! This means a pair of shoes you can wear all day, a T-shirt and a pair of shorts. Now’s your time to play tourist. Wear your most bold or funny T-shirt and don’t be afraid to punch up your outfit with pins, Mickey Mouse ears and wild sunglasses. Here’s the place to wear your belt bag as a crossbody—or break out your cutest crossbody. Let your outfit be a conversation starter.

A night on the town

This could be anything from dinner and a show to a rooftop lounge or a brewery. Modify that “dress to impress” idea and go for a chic, monochromatic look that can be modified with accessories—black with white, pink with blue, you know your body best. You’ll really want a comfortable shoe, so your best flats or loafers should come into play here. Tie it all together with a wrap or sport coat for when those evening chills surface.

Now you’re ready for your date! Relax and have fun.
