Moo Deng Who? New Sumatran Tiger Cub Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom has an adorable new addition—a tiny newborn Sumatran tiger cub named Bakso, who is sure to melt hearts and become a fan favorite. Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Bakso is the first Sumatran tiger cub to arrive in seven years, making his debut even more exciting. Under the care of the animal care team, Bakso is already showing a playful and curious personality that has everyone enchanted.
What makes this birth even more special is Bakso’s potential impact on the future of his critically endangered species. With fewer than 600 Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild and in managed care, Bakso represents hope for conservation efforts and the preservation of this majestic species. Disney’s dedicated team, including veterinarians like Dr. Natalie Mylniczenko, played a key role in monitoring the health and wellbeing of Bakso’s mother, Sohni, throughout her pregnancy, ensuring a smooth and successful birth.
“Tigers are in steep decline in the wild, so it is truly significant to welcome a new baby here at Disney,” said Dr. Mylniczenko. Through the use of advanced technology, from frequent blood tests to ultrasounds, the care team was able to monitor Sohni’s pregnancy, much like they did for other species like the African elephant. Sohni was even trained to voluntarily participate in her own care, a testament to the strong bond between the animals and their keepers.
Of course, the arrival of Bakso also brings excitement beyond his role in conservation—because this little cub is simply adorable. From his tiny paws to his playful nature, Bakso is already being dubbed as one of the cutest animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Guests visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom will have to wait until early 2025 to meet Bakso and his mom Sohni as they join the Maharajah Jungle Trek. Until then, the animal care team will continue to nurture and prepare Bakso for his public debut.
Disney’s work with renowned organizations such as the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the Species Survival Plan (SSP) has been crucial in helping endangered species like the Sumatran tiger thrive in managed care. This latest birth is just another example of Disney’s commitment to preserving and strengthening endangered species populations, all while providing educational experiences for guests.
The Disney Conservation Fund also plays a major role in supporting tiger conservation in the wild. Since 1995, the fund has provided assistance to 15 organizations working to protect tigers and their habitats. This includes a recent grant awarded to the Wildlife Conservation Society in support of its efforts to safeguard some of the world’s most endangered tigers.
Bakso may be small, but his impact on conservation and the hearts of Disney guests is set to be massive.
