Tucked away in an unassuming strip mall is Orlando’s newest foodie hotspot. This new culinary destination JazTro By Chef D.O.C., is the latest concept from former RusTeak executive Chef Juan “Danny” Otero, and we’re obsessed!

The eight-seat resto is the perfect playground for Chef Danny’s culinary creativity. “It has always been a dream to have my own concept, in which I can showcase everything I have learned and continue learning and also embracing all the passion and techniques from loved ones,” describes Chef Danny. By combining the passion of his grandfather Ovidio Cruz, the first chef in his family, with the flavors of Puerto Rico and Mexico, courtesy of his mom Lourdes Cruz and his mother-in-law Maria Cruz Salazar respectfully, Chef Danny has created something unique.

“[JazTro] by Chef D.O.C. offers something different because it combines a very casual and approachable service with food choices and alternatives that are very hard to find all in the same place, and most importantly, having the connection from chef to the guest. We are a family-owned business that has been blessed with the opportunity to serve the community and leave a mark in the culinary world,” says Chef Danny.
Now, what you’ve been waiting for, the food.

We kicked off the meal with the “Papas locas” crazy potatoes—a major winner for the evening. Think nachos but with french fries. They loaded these crispy fries with diced tomatoes, red onion, bacon, green onions, cheese sauce, topped off with M.K. and cilantro sauces.

We followed that up with the “Tostoncitos” Rellenos and the shrimp and grits—two of the resto’s top sellers—and we can see why! On the Rellenos, the plantain bowls were super crispy, and once again, they topped it with those killer M.K. and cilantro sauces that could make cardboard taste delish. The grits were super creamy, and we loved the spices on the shrimp.

Another major winner of the night? Chef Danny’s famous coquito bread pudding. If you aren’t familiar with coquito, it’s coconut-based Puerto Rican eggnog. The pudding was super creamy and warm, and we were sopping up crème Anglais and ice cream.

We’re definitely hooked and will be back to check out the rest of the menu and their daily specials. Don’t worry about securing your seat in this mini resto. They’re also offering takeout, so you’ll be able to enjoy all their tasty creations from the comfort of pajamas on your couch—no judgment here because we’re dreaming about snacking on those crazy potatoes during our next movie night.
