Publisher Letter: In Honor of Black History Month

Until we meet again.

It is February, Orlando! That time of year when the weather tends to be a bit cooler and dryer, and often tempts your visiting relatives into looking at Zillow properties in Orlando for their little slice of paradise.

This month we’re highlighting stories about Black Central Floridians in honor of Black History Month. Writer Ronny Maye sits down with local doctors Patrice Cates-Lonberger and Pamela Cates-Smith to discuss their careers, how they work together, and how they’re inspiring a new generation of young women to enter the medical field. We also sit down with Natisha Asbell, owner of Authentic Books, who is set to open a new brick-and-mortar location later this month. Next, head north to Rhode Island with Brendan O’Connor for a fun-filled exploration of The Ocean State, beginning on page 20.

For our main story this month, we take a look at ten local Black leaders and learn more about their history, experience and outlook for the future. From Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings to Congressman Maxwell Frost to Eatonville Mayor Angie Gardner, these are the stories you don’t want to miss.  Later, we visit several of our favorite Black-owned restaurants in Orlando and invite you to do the same. From DaJen Eats to Sister Honey’s and the brand-new Cow & Cheese, these locations are serving up some of the best food in Central Florida, starting on page 74.

For those planning a wedding, or for the wedding lover in us all, turn to page 43 as we tell two amazing local wedding love stories, discuss wedding dress shapes and offer a quick quiz for couples to help them find their perfect wedding style. Still need a venue for your special day? Flip to page 60 for our Wedding Reception Chart, filled with everything you’ll need to help narrow down your venue.

Finally, we are very happy to announce our new editor, Jennifer McKee! Jennifer has been an editor for publications across the country, but many of our readers may know her from her amazing travel stories found in our latest issues. Her knowledge, storytelling and journalistic integrity will be a welcomed addition to our team. As we transition this letter back to the editor, I thank you, our readers, for your time over this past year. We’ve shared stories, exchanged opinions and fond memories, and fostered a general love of the place we call home.

Until we meet again.
